Matthew Friesz, AIA, NCARB, LEED Green Assoc. from the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) will present on a range of licensure topics relevant to students, aspiring architects, supervisors, architects, and people in the architecture profession. The presentation will review the steps necessary to achieve licensure to become an architect and other programs to get the most out of your career in architecture.

Topics will include:

  • Background of NCARB
  • The entities involved in the licensure process
  • How to progress successfully through the Architectural Experience Program® (AXP®)
  • What to expect with the Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®)
  • Recent changes to NCARB programs
  • Value of the NCARB Certificate

Friesz will remain on-site after the presentation to help address specific questions on an individual basis.
This program is presented in conjunction with AIASF's Architectural Licensing Committee (ALC).


Learning Objectives
  1. Recognize the importance of career planning.
  2. Identify the requirements for completing the AXP and the ARE.
  3. Outline the process of becoming licensed.
  4. Utilize resources available to identify the proper person or organization to contact for answers to specific questions.


About the Presenter

Outreach Manager, Experience + Education, NCARB

Matthew Friesz is the Outreach Manager, Experience + Education at NCARB. In this position, he helps to support experience and education programs as they evolve with the architecture profession.

Friesz has four years of experience in architectural design and project management. While working for architecture-engineering firms in Bismarck, ND and Houston, TX, his projects ranged from corporate tenant fit-ups to K-12 education campuses.

Friesz holds a Master of Architecture degree from North Dakota State University and is licensed to practice architecture in the state of Texas. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects, has achieved the credential of LEED Green Associate, and holds the NCARB Certificate for national reciprocity.
