The catastrophic effects of climate change are increasingly present, and cities are gearing up to meet GHG emissions reduction targets. Where should investments be made in urban infrastructure to meet these goals? This hands-on workshop asks participants to decide. To do so, they will need to choose between deploying solar and energy efficiency strategies for one of six cities, striking a balance between urban density, building energy intensity, and solar access for their city.

Learning Objectives

  1. Explore innovations and advancements in building integrated solar PV technology and application
  2. Understand the factors that contribute to GHG emissions reductions for urban centers
  3. Explore the role that solar PV can play in substantial GHG emission reductions in our cities
  4. Understand that each urban center needs a unique solution to achieve GHG emissions reduction given its distinct set of challenges

About the Speakers

Maria Grimm, LEED AP BD+C
Associate Builing Performance Specialist, MEYERS+ ENGINEERS

With a background in architecture and building science, Maria began working as a high performance building consultant in 2010. Maria specializes in indoor environmental quality and is an expert in daylight design and thermal and visual comfort. Now at Meyers+ Engineers, she believes in the utilization of technology to design high performance, climatic-responsive architecture that responds to the current global and local environmental conditions.

Claire McKenna
High Performance Building Specialist, WSP

Claire specializes in integrating solar photovoltaic and battery-based hybrid power systems into buildings, working with architects and project owners to accomplish forward-thinking energy goals for high performance buildings. Claire believes that a building integrated design approach is crucial for stakeholders to gain the full benefit of renewable energy: a unified, distinctive aesthetic; energy cost reduction; and energy security. Claire is especially adept at developing renewable energy and hybrid power solutions for zero net energy buildings, though she has designed systems for residential, commercial, and utility scale projects across the country.
