Whole Foods Market on the Alameda

Special Commendation

Urban Design

This grocery store features a separate brewery building with an in-house microbrewery and rooftop beer garden operated by Mission Creek Brewing Company. The store is one of the most sustainable grocery stores in the nation and has revitalized The Alameda corridor, acting as a gateway to downtown San Jose.

The jury noted that food shopping is an inherently social thing; it is an opportunity to see neighbors and friends. The designers of this urban grocery have done well to enliven the streetscape while dealing with the parking of cars, service access, and other necessary urban obstacles. The linkage, or breezeway, held back at the corner facilitates connections between the parking zone and urban street frontage while maximizing the social space and leveraging the brewery as a social activator. All this is skillfully woven together with a lively mix of materials, form, and color elements often sorely lacking in many urban areas.
