Architecture

The renovation and expansion of Palo Alto’s Rinconada (main) Library – designed by Edward Durell Stone and opened in 1958 – refreshes and restores original design elements and ageless intent while carefully adding spaces, systems, and resources to fulfill 21st century library needs and ensure an ongoing architectural dialogue.

The jury noted that a number of Stone's buildings across the US have been renovated or altered in recent years, and this project rises to the difficult challenge of how to touch an important modernist work: how to respond to one and even enhance one without destroying it. Thoughtful projects like this will bring long overdue attention to the breadth and importance of Stone's work.
