Merit Award

Architecture

Located at the crossroads of North Beach in San Francisco, the new branch library provides expanded community services to the diverse urban neighborhood. As part of the re-envisioned Joe DiMaggio Playground, the new relocated library is a pavilion in the park and creates a civic lantern for the community.

The jury commented that this light filled library serves as an inviting pavilion in the park. It makes the most of a restrained palette and few simple moves addressing the scale and rhythm of the urban street front while anchoring the corner and connecting to the park. With its careful attention to scale and special qualities, the design for this small branch library fits the community, enlivens the park, and provides the kind of place people just want to be.
