Citation Award with Historic Preservation Commendation

Interior Architecture

This school is an adaptive reuse of a former Church built in 1910. The project is an exercise in architectural grafting. While preserving the historic shell, a new structure is fused within. Structural and accessibility upgrades were introduced along with a central natural ventilation chimney and a rooftop teaching garden.

The jury commented that this kind of project is one of the most difficult projects to pull off successfully. That is, to take a historic structure, designed for a different client for a different purpose and time, and insert a dramatically different and complex program into it. It is very well executed and the result is both charming and delightful.
