Honor Award with Historic Preservation Commendation

Architecture

This 1886 residence was home to artist David Ireland and site of his most significant art installation. In addition to preserving the building’s historic exterior and the fragile artist-transformed interior spaces, the project includes a terrace and basement level with artist’s archive, as well as structural and accessibility improvements throughout.

The jury loved this project. The restoration was executed with care and fidelity that is seldom seen, but its touch of genius is its juxtaposition with a simple modern concrete entry volume that simultaneously refuses to compete while signaling that this is an institutional project.
