Architecture

The Academic Center transforms a prominent site on the College of Marin’s Kentfield campus. The design engages three generations of buildings on a sloped, wooded site and redefines an historic quad on campus. At a main intersection in town, the 47,000 SF facility is a gateway to the surrounding community. Sustainability goals include maximization of day-lighting, natural ventilation and solar shading to ensure an energy efficient building envelope, and efficient use of materials. The project is designed to achieve LEED Gold. In addition, the new building orientation and layout captures spectacular views of the region’s iconic mountain from each second and third floor studio.

The jury commented that the scale of the gorgeous layered boxes is just right. The simple massing, limited surface palette, and the telegraphed linearity make a striking composition with the stately heritage trees. The organization and planning within the landscape has its roots in good campus history.
