Special Commendation

Social Responsibility

Dramatically filling a void in San Francisco’s SOMA Redevelopment Area, 474 Natoma provides 60 affordable apartments for a diverse group of low income families. The high density complex is knitted into the urban fabric as a transition between the gritty Sixth Street SRO corridor and the gentrifying Eastern SOMA neighborhood.

The jury noted that these non-profit affordable housing units knit tightly into the urban fabric while providing a surprising level of natural light and quality living space on a budget. At 220 units per acre this high density housing serves as an excellent model for affordable redevelopment of tight urban spaces. It is equally impressive when it comes to energy and water efficiency achievement without breaking the bank.
