EAMES - A contemporary dance about Ray and Charles Eames
Kristin Damrow, a prolific Bay Area choreographer since 2010, will diverge from her usual abstract-style to create a narrative contemporary dance piece for Kristin Damrow & Company’s second home season, EAMES, at ODC Theater January 25-27th, 2018. EAMES is inspired by the life and iconic designs of Ray and Charles Eames. Ray, a painter, and Charles, an architect, revolutionized the face of design in the 1950s, creating furniture and other functional art to serve middle-class families, not just the wealthy. The Eames Lounge chair remains today as iconic as it was when they first designed it. But there is a lesser-known Eames story—the one about their relationship as husband and wife, and as collaborative business partners. New York City-based curator Donald Albrecht put it, the industry had “a hard time with a husband and wife working together,” describing the couple’s work dynamic as "an interesting moment of sexual American politics.” Ray’s struggle and courage helped pave the way for women designers and artists are acknowledged for their work. In EAMES, five dancers—one male, four female—will explore the gender and artistic dynamics between the two creative geniuses, whose love and shared devotion to design resonates to this day.
